Our coat of arms

Following our transition to Town status, we have adopted a new coat of arms.

What do the symbols stand for?

  • Swordfish Aeroplane; represents the production of the Fairey Swordfish at Sherburn in Elmet and the area's aviation history.
  • Windmill; represents the farming history of the village and the two (possibly more?) windmills that were situated in the now town centre.
  • Teasel: represents the early teasel trade that the village was famous for.
  • Crown: represents King Athelstan (924-939).
  • The middle band; the same as that in the Hungate coat of arms, as seen on the old Hungate hospital.
  • Silhouettes; The Old Girls School and All Saints Church which are both Sherburn landmarks and key historic buildings in the town.
  •
