Sherburn in Elmet is a small town located in the Selby District of North Yorkshire between York and Leeds. It was formerly part of the West Riding. The population in 2010 was estimated at about 6,400 residents.
The origins of the village may go back to Roman times and the name reflects the fact that it was once within the Kingdom of Elmet (see history). In modern times the village is known for: its large industrial estate (located on part of the world war two airfield); the airfield itself, operated by Sherburn Aero Club and one of the busiest small airfields in the country; and Squires Café, known by motorcyclists throughout the Country.
Residents of Sherburn benefit from a good selection of independent shops, including bakers and butchers. In addition there is a lot of open space in the village itself, including Eversley Park (home to Sherburn Bears RLFC and Sherburn Cricket Club as well as the location of an adventure playground), the Eversley Park Community Centre and Finkle Hill Recreation Ground, home to Sherburn White Rose Football Club.
Sherburn retains two railway stations. To the south of the village, and on the Hull-Selby–Leeds line is South Milford Station (which is within the Sherburn border) whilst to the east, on the Sheffield-York Line, is Sherburn in Elmet Station.
Although surrounded by countryside Sherburn is only 15 miles east of Leeds and many residents take advantage of the employment, social, retail and cultural opportunities there.
